Today we take a look back on Batman and Robin. It was released into theaters in 1997. It stars Chris O’ Donnell, George Clooney, Uma Thurman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Alicia Silverstone. Additionally, there is a cameo by Coolio. Batman and Robin was directed by Joel Schumacher.
Not even a minute into this and it is revealed that both the costumes for Batman and Robin have nipples on them. Additionally, a shot of Batman’s backside is shown.
Just about every line of dialogue is some sort of pun or a one-liner. This first line of the movie takes place when Batman (Clooney) and Robin (O’Donnell) are next to the bat mobile and Robin delivers the first of many one-liners throughout the film. “Chicks dig the car.” This is a sign of things to come. Batman replies with, “This is why Superman works alone.”
Mr. Freeze’s (Schwarzenegger) first sentence follows this pattern. “The iceman comeith.”
Apparently skates come out of the boots of Batman and Robin as is shown during their first encounter with Mr. Freeze.
All of this within the first ten minutes of Batman and Robin.
Batman and Robin don’t trust each other, how cliché.
Poison Ivy (Thurman) is the queen of nature and plant puns.
For some reason, perhaps motivation, Mr. Freeze has his thugs watching some corny Christmas song. While listening to this Mr. Freeze dances to it and instructs his army to sing with it. Truly a hardcore criminal Mr. Freeze is. You could say he is cold hearted.
Anyways, Poison Ivy’s perfume causes men to go crazy over her at an auction. During the auction Batman gets in on the bidding and states “seven million, never leave the cave without it!” It in this case “it” is referring to a Batman credit card. Mr. Freeze interrupts the bidding to steal some diamonds, but not before making ice puns.
Mr. Freeze gets arrested and is taken to his holding place in a freezer. Yes in a freezer. Additionally, Bruce Wayne’s girlfriend wants him to marry him. I thought this was a Batman movie not a love story.
A pointless motorcycle scene is shown where Alfred’s niece shows she can handle a bike for the most part, until Robin has to rescue her.
In a needless subplot Alfred is dying.
Poison Ivy and Baine break Mr. Freeze out of jail and they join forces. Their hideout is a neon lit ice cream factory. Furthermore the codpieces for both are clearly visible. Anyway, Poison Ivy killed Mr. Freeze’s frozen wife and tells the ice man that Batman did it. Did I mention there are more one-liners in this movie every few seconds?
And Mr. Freeze just happens to have the cure for the illness Alfred has. What are the odds of that, a trillion to one?
Robin demands there be a Robin signal in the sky while he and Batman continue to fight over Poison Ivy.
Poison Ivy then uses her hypnotic perfume to get Commissioner Gordon to reveal the location of the bat signal.
Alfred’s niece, Barbra, just happens to crack the password on a computer to figure out that she is currently in the same house as Batman and Robin.
And now there is a Robin signal in the sky, which further divides Batman and Robin apart.
The security system Alfred installed is set up so that when Barbara breaks into the bat cave that alarms stop going off as the butler thought she would find her way to the cave. He also took the liberty of making a Batgirl suit for Barbara. There is a shot of the backside and her naughty bits on the outfit, which like the shots of the suits Batman and Robin earlier serve no purpose. Oddly enough there are no nipples on the Batgirl suit.
Batgirl some how manages to find Poison Ivy’s hideout and saves Batman and Robin. Batgirl kicks Poison Ivy into a venus flytrap apparently killing her.
Anyways, the trio to heads to observatory where Mr. Freeze has converted a telescope into a freeze gun somehow, but not before they all change uniforms. I guess the fact that world is being turned into a winter wonderland is of little importance when compared to how they look.
They find a way to reverse the freezing process that the world is enduring but not before finishing each others sentences. Mr. Freeze is still in the observatory and makes his obligatory one-liner during the fight scene. Baine is killed by Batgirl and Robin. Batman says a one-liner during his fight with Mr. Freeze.
Batgirl says her first one-liners of the movie as they thaw out the city. As the city is unthawing there are clearly rubber ice cycles on the side of a police car.
Batman reveals to Mr. Freeze using a camera that Batgirl had recorded that Poison Ivy killed his wife. As it turns out the good guys saved Mr. Freeze’s wife. Batman gets the iceman to give him the cure for Alfred’s disease. “Take two of these (the cure for the disease) and call me in the morning.”
As fate would have it Poison Ivy is not dead even though she appeared to be earlier. Not only that, but her cell mate is Mr. Freeze. And fittingly enough this films ends on a one-liner from Alfred.
It takes talent to have a great cast like the one in Batman and Robin and make such a horrible movie. The action scenes are quite dull and are filled with tons of puns. Additionally, this film almost killed the Batman franchise. The plot is all over the place and makes little sense. Batman and Robin was nominated the Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film, as well as categories for Best Make-up and Best Costume. Alicia Silverstone won the Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actress. Schumacher (Worst Director), George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell (Worst Screen Couple), Akiva Goldsman (Worst Screenplay), both Chris O’Donnell and Arnold Schwarzenegger (Worst Supporting Actor), Uma Thurman (Worst Supporting Actress) and Billy Corgan (Worst Song for “The End Is the Beginning Is the End”) were also nominated for categories at the Razzie Awards. Batman & Robin received nominations for Worst Picture, Worst Remake or Sequel and Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property.
On this website I wrote that Manos: The Hand of Fate was the worst movie I have ever seen. While that remains true, Batman and Robin is a very close second. Batman and Robin earns an amazing negative 29 stars.
