Where Are Feingold’s Lobbyist Pals?

August 31st, 2010 by Robert Rosati

The following is a press release from Ron Johnson, a candidate for U.S. Senator.

Senator Russ Feingold released a new ad today titled “Look Out for Us,” using largely the same cast as his previous as “On Our Side.” A closer look at the ad however shows that a controversial figure in his previous ad was not included this time around – registered AFL-CIO lobbyist Joanne Ricca.

When previously asked about having a lobbyist appear in his ad to declare that Senator Feingold was on their side of the issues, Feingold defended such actions as “perfectly appropriate.” After acknowledging that he was in fact standing on the side of special interests and lobbyists, it appears Senator Feingold has had a change of heart about flaunting that fact to the people of Wisconsin.

“Two weeks ago, Senator Feingold was proud to finally admit to the people of Wisconsin that he was on the side of special interest groups and union lobbyists,” Sara Sendek, spokeswoman for Ron Johnson for Senate said. “After promising voters that he would reform the culture of lobbying in Washington, instead Senator Feingold embraced lobbyists and declared himself to be on their side. Maybe this new and stunning admission did not go over with voters as he’d hoped, and Feingold will once again revert to his old tricks and false promises.”

Ricca, a long-time lobbyist, currently serves as the legislative representative and research director for the AFL-CIO in Milwaukee.

Throughout his Senate Career, Russ Feingold has Received $1,025,500 in Union PAC Contributions. (Center for Responsive Politics, www.opensecrets.org, Accessed August 21, 2010)

In Early 1993, Feingold Declared He And His Senate Staff Would Play By “Wisconsin Rules” And Not Accept Gifts From Lobbyists Or Anyone Seeking Influence. “Last week Feingold issued an edict, to apply to himself and his entire staff, that where ethics are concerned, they would play by ‘Wisconsin rules.’ That meant they could not accept gifts of any sort from lobbyists or anyone else seeking influence. Not even a cup of coffee.” (Dan Allegretti, “Feingold Opts for Wisconsin Ethics,” Capital Times [Madison, WI.], 1/21/93)

Feingold: “There’s Something Insidious And Dangerous About People In Government Accepting Things Of Value From People They’re Trying To Regulate.” (Dan Allegretti, “Feingold Opts for Wisconsin Ethics,” Capital Times [Madison, WI.], 1/21/93)

Feingold Said The System In Washington Was “Tainted” And Brought Lobbyists And Legislators Closer Together Than They Were In Wisconsin. Feingold: “It’s not an attempt to be holier than thou. I think the system is tainted here. It brings lobbyists and legislators closer together than they are back home.” (Dan Allegretti, “Feingold Opts for Wisconsin Ethics,” Capital Times [Madison, WI.], 1/21/93)

Primates Receive Stimulus Funds

August 31st, 2010 by Robert Rosati

The following is a press release from Ron Johnson, a candidate for U.S. Senate.

In 2009, Russ Feingold voted for a stimulus bill he said would create jobs and pontificated that the funds should be spent wisely. But since that time Wisconsin has lost more than 78,000 jobs, Feingold is defending his vote, and a new report details 100 egregious examples of unwise stimulus spending.

Have you ever wondered why monkeys respond negatively to inequity and unfairness? Researchers at Georgia State University have received nearly $700,000 in stimulus funds just to answer that question. The money will be put towards studying seven different species of primates in order to clarify “how decision-making is affected by unequal outcomes.”

Researchers in Georgia may now have a chance to study social patterns of primates, but people in Wisconsin continue to face a poor economy and continued job loss.

“Maybe Senator Feingold thinks we should be spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to study the social patterns of monkeys and chimpanzees, but the people of Wisconsin are far more concerned about the economy and job creation,” said Juston Johnson, Campaign Manager for Ron Johnson for Senate. “While Senator Feingold is wasting Wisconsin tax dollars and spending us into debt, Wisconsin voters are looking for a candidate to offer real solutions for our economy.”

The Johnson Campaign will be highlighting wasteful stimulus spending projects Russ Feingold believes are getting the job done for Wisconsin families until Election Day.

Stimulus Facts:

Feingold Said “Stimulus” Must Be Spent Wisely. Feingold Said “Stimulus” Must Be Spent Wisely. “Now that the economic recovery package has been signed into law, our focus must be on the challenges ahead, including getting our fiscal house in order and making sure that there is strong oversight of these taxpayer dollars. These funds must be spent wisely if they are to truly work for Wisconsin’s families.” (Editorial, “Russ Feingold: Stimulus Package Makes Sense,” La Crosse Tribune, 2/25/2009.)

Three days prior to the signing of the stimulus, Senator Feingold issued a press release saying the stimulus would create 2.4 million jobs in the first year, and about nine million jobs in the first three years.

New Feingold Campaign Ad: “Looks Out for Us”

August 31st, 2010 by Robert Rosati

The following is a press release from Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold.

Highlights Feingold’s record of supporting tax cuts for Wisconsin families and small businesses Johnson opposes tax cuts for 95 percent of working Wisconsin families and supports extending Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent

Today, the Feingold Campaign released a new television ad statewide, “Looks Out for Us.” The ad features Wisconsin citizens speaking out about Senator Feingold’s record of supporting tax cuts for 95 percent of Wisconsin working families, and tax credits for over 80,000 Wisconsin small businesses to relieve the burden of rising health care costs.

Ron Johnson, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, opposes the tax cuts for 95 percent of Wisconsin working families and would repeal the tax credits for over 80,000 small businesses. In addition, Johnson has announced his support for cutting corporate taxes and extending Bush Administration tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest one percent of Americans.

Senator Feingold supported the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act because after eight years of failed Republican economic policies, combined with the reckless actions of Wall Street, our country was thrown into the worst recession since the Great Depression. The Recovery Act provided necessary investments to help move our economy in the right direction, and more than one-third of the spending in the act was for tax cuts.

Ron Johnson opposes the Recovery Act tax cuts for 95 percent of Wisconsin working families and believes that Wisconsin has not benefited from the Recovery Act, saying, “We would have been far better off not spending any of the money and let the recovery happen as it was going to happen.” [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 5/15/10]

Johnson also supports cutting the corporate tax rate and extending Bush Administration tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest one percent of Americans, and believes that these tax cuts can be made permanent without increasing the deficit. However, he has not yet offered a plan to pay for them. [WisPolitics luncheon, 7/26/10]

Feingold also supported health insurance reform legislation to provide more choices, more affordability and more protections for Wisconsin businesses. This year, up to 84,395 Wisconsin small businesses could receive tax credits of up to 35 percent of premiums to help make coverage for employees more affordable. The reform legislation also cracks down on insurance companies raising rates on a year-to-year basis due to an employee falling ill.

Johnson has said that repealing health insurance reform, and the tax credits for over 80,000 small businesses in Wisconsin, is his top priority. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported last month that Johnson said, “The U.S. should rip up the recently passed health reform law.” [Vicki McKenna Show, WISN, 5/17/10] and [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 7/26/10]

Earlier this year, Feingold also voted for the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act, which contains tax cuts and infrastructure investments designed to put people back to work. In addition to creating jobs, the HIRE Act is also fiscally responsible: the new law is fully offset by cracking down on offshore tax shelters and actually reduces the deficit by nearly $1 billion.

Feingold also has introduced a plan for an aggressive payroll tax break that is targeted toward all businesses that hire new employees, increase wages or provide part-time employees full-time work. Earlier this year, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office analyzed a tax break similar to Russ’s proposal, and found it would be among the most efficient and effective ways to spur employment.

Last week, when asked by Liz Cheney on Fox News about his legislative priorities if elected, Johnson advocated a complete dismantling of every tax cut enacted since January 2009, and would “wave a magic wand,” to “wipe off the Obama agenda and start over.”

Feingold’s Record of Supporting Tax Cuts for Wisconsin Families and Small Businesses

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act – Senate Vote #5, 1/15/09

Fox Business, in their fact-check analysis of President Obama’s recent remarks at a Wisconsin town hall meeting, found the Recovery Act did cut taxes for more than 95 percent of Wisconsin working families.

According to Citizens for Tax Justice, “ [T]he major tax cuts enacted in the 2009 economic stimulus bill actually reduced federal income taxes for tax year 2009 for 98 percent of all working families and individuals.”

Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – Senate Vote #396, 12/14/09

Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 – Senate Vote #105, 3/25/10

HIRE Act – Senate Vote #55, 3/17/10

Feingold also has introduced a plan for an aggressive payroll tax break that is targeted toward all businesses that hire new employees, increase wages or provide part-time employees full-time work. Earlier this year, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office analyzed a tax break similar to Russ’s proposal, and found it would be among the most efficient and effective ways to spur employment.

Johnson Opposes Tax Cuts for Wisconsin’s Middle Class…

Johnson opposes the Recovery Act that cut taxes for 95 percent of Wisconsin working families: “We would have been far better off not spending any of the money and let the recovery happen as it was going to happen.” [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 5/15/10]

Johnson opposes health insurance reform and would repeal tax credits for over 80,000 Wisconsin small businesses: “The U.S. should rip up the recently passed health reform law and emphasize free-market principles such as health savings accounts and out-of-pocket charges – for as big a chunk of the country’s medical care as possible.” [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 7/26/10]

Johnson supports wiping off all tax cuts passed since the September 2008 financial collapse, “If you can wave a magic wand, what you’d like to do is just wipe off the Obama agenda and start over. Bring certainty back to this economy.” [“Hannity,” 8/24/10]

Last week, Johnson came out in support of “horse trading” tax breaks for middle class homeowners. In a report by Madison’s WKOW 27 News, Johnson is quoted as saying he wouldn’t rule out doing away with home mortgage interest deductions that provide homeowners a tax break. [WKOW 27, Johnson willing to "horse trade" mortgage interest deduction, 8/20/2010]

…but Johnson Supports Tax Cuts for the Wealthiest One Percent and Corporations

Johnson supports extending and making permanent Bush Administration tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent. On Charlie Sykes’s radio program, when Sykes asked Johnson, “What about tax cuts, though? Can you cut taxes without also exploding the deficit?” Johnson replied, “Well first of all, you shouldn’t allow the tax cuts that Bush instituted to expire.” [Charlie Sykes program, WTMJ, 6/30/10]

Johnson supports cutting the corporate tax rate instead of tax cuts for 95 percent of Wisconsin working families contained in the Recovery Act, stating “So, what I would have targeted quite honestly is I would have lowered the corporate tax rate to make us more competitive. “ [WisPolitics luncheon, 7/26/10]

Feingold Calls on WI Accountability Board to Uphold MOVE Act

August 31st, 2010 by Robert Rosati

The following is a press release from Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold.

.S. Senator Russ Feingold sent the following letter today to the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board urging the board to do everything possible to ensure that members of the armed forces are able to vote in the upcoming elections.

A copy of Feingold’s letter can be viewed here or below.

August 30, 2010

Wisconsin Government Accountability Board
ATTN: Kevin Kennedy, Director and General Counsel
P.O Box 7984
Madison, WI 53707-7984

Dear Mr. Kennedy,

I write to urge you to do everything possible to ensure that members of the armed forces serving our country overseas are able to vote in the upcoming elections and that their votes will be counted.

As I am sure you agree, no Wisconsinites should be disenfranchised simply because they are stationed overseas. That is why Congress passed the Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act last year, to ensure that those who are risking their own lives to protect our country are not deprived of their own right to vote. Among other things, the Act specifically requires states to mail absentee ballots to overseas voters at least 45 days before Election Day.

As you know, the Department of Defense just rejected the state’s request for a waiver of the 45-day mailing requirement of the MOVE Act, stating that “the State’s proposed comprehensive plan for this election does not provide sufficient time for [overseas and military voters] to vote and have their ballots counted.” While I appreciate the challenges the state may face in complying with the MOVE Act, given Wisconsin’s late primary date, I urge you to take all steps possible to ensure that Wisconsin complies with the letter and the spirit of the law. Our brave men and women in uniform deserve nothing less.

Sincerely,

Russell D. Feingold
U.S. Senator

Wisconsin Corn Growers Endorse Scott Walker for Governor

August 31st, 2010 by Robert Rosati

The following is a press release from Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, a candidate for Wisconsin Governor.

Walker has already received endorsements from Dairy Business Association and Volunteers for Agriculture

August 30, 2010 – CORN PAC, the political action committee of the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association (WCGA), has announced its endorsements for the September Primary Elections.

The Corn Growers endorse Scott Walker for Governor. Walker, a Republican, is facing Mark Neumann in the primary which will determine who faces off against Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

“Walker clearly is the best candidate for rural Wisconsin,” said WCGA President Brian Long, Weyauwega. “He understands the challenges we face from overregulation, and we believe he is the best candidate for putting the state back in a strong fiscal position.”

WCGA represents the interests of Wisconsin’s Corn Growers on Federal, State, and local issues. The WCGA recently formed CORN PAC to get more directly involved in state elections.
