Milwaukee Bucks Help Tip-Off Fire Prevention Week

September 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

This Saturday, October 2, as a prelude to National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 3-9), Milwaukee Bucks players Andrew Bogut, Jon Brockman, Tiny Gallon, Ersan Ilyasova and Larry Sanders, along with team mascot Bango, will join the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) in conjunction with Project F.O.C.U.S. (Firefighters Out Creating Urban Safety) to inspect, install, and change batteries of smoke detectors for Milwaukee residents.

Two fire engines will pick up the Bucks from the Bradley Center at 2 p.m. and escort the players to the Engine 30 firehouse, located at 2903 N. Teutonia Ave. in Milwaukee. The Bucks and the MFD will hold a short media conference upon their arrival, in which fire department personnel and Bogut, acting as the Honorary Fire Chief for the fifth consecutive year, will stress the importance of fire safety. From the fire house, the players and Bango will head to a local neighborhood (22ndSt. and Locust) and assist the MFD in installing tamper-proof smoke detectors in homes.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, the MFD will sponsor the 12th Annual Poster-to-Billboard Contest for all Milwaukee public and private schools. The four first-place winners will be announced at the Bucks preseason opener, an October 5 contest against Chicago at the Bradley Center. The Bucks will provide each of these students with a Netbook, including one year of internet service provided by Time Warner Cable. All 10 winners and their classes, totaling 750 students, will be in attendance on October 5. Tickets to the game can be purchased by calling 1-800-4NBA-TIX, or by visiting www.bucks.com or the Bradley Center box office.

Project F.O.C.U.S., now in its 19th year, is an MFD program that sends firefighters door-to-door in Milwaukee neighborhoods to ensure that area homes are equipped with functioning smoke detectors.

Ryder Cup team and Steve Stricker donate to University of Wisconsin

September 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

Madison resident and Ryder Cup team member Steve Stricker is donating $25,000 to the University of Wisconsin and the same amount to his alma mater the University of Illinois as part of the United States Ryder Cup Team’s $2.6 million donation in support of charities and Play Golf America University programs.

Each U.S. Ryder Cup Team participant as well as U.S. Ryder Cup Team Captain Pavin, are designating $100,000 to the charity of their choice; $50,000 to the college/university of their choice for Play Golf America University programming; and $50,000 to the Ryder Cup Junior Golf Academy, which is scheduled for a summer launch in 2011 to benefit aspiring junior golfers who otherwise would not have the opportunity to receive PGA Professional instruction.

Since the Ryder Cup Outreach Program began in 1999, more than $15 million has been donated on behalf of the Ryder Cup team and Captain. To date, PGA Professionals have provided instruction to more than 29,000 college students through this program.

Stricker and his wife Nicki, a former UW-Madison golfer, are also contributing $50,000 to the University of Wisconsin Childrens Hospital and $25,000 to Very Special Arts (VSA) of Wisconsin.

Stricker, who is playing in his second Ryder Cup event, said, “Well, University of Illinois is where I went to college and kind of shaped the kind of player that I am today. I owe a lot to that program. I go back and do a fundraiser for them every year, and Wisconsin is very close to my heart, as well. My wife went to school there and played on the women’s golf team. I grew up a Badger fan, so I feel very close to both schools.”

Regarding the Play Golf America program Stricker said, “Yeah, it’s opportunity to give a little bit of money and get a program started and give kids an opportunity that otherwise they may not have that opportunity. The game of golf as we know is a great learning tool and just teaches everyday situations on the golf course, how to handle things. To give that opportunity for other college kids is great.
Play Golf America University is a PGA of America college and university golf program, designed to teach and engage students in the game of golf through PGA Professional instruction and other golf programs.”

The 38th Ryder Cup will be conducted Oct. 1-3, at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales.

$1.2 million Headed to Milwaukee for Community Development

September 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

Today, Congresswoman Gwen Moore announced that $1.2 million is headed to Milwaukee to help spur community development in low-income areas.

Two Milwaukee-based Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) will both receive $600,000 which will be used to provide loans to small businesses and for affordable housing for those who need it.

The awards to Legacy Bancorp, Inc and North Milwaukee State Bank are part of the $25 million announced nationwide through the Treasury Department’s Bank Enterprise Award program. Recipients were chosen based on lending and investment in areas where 30 percent of the population lives at or below the poverty level and where unemployment is 1.5 percent higher than the national average.

Congresswoman Gwen Moore said, “It’s not news that people are struggling and Milwaukee is hurting. And recent reports just tell us what we already knew – this recession is driving more people into poverty. This will help lift up some of our city’s most distressed neighborhoods by leveraging private investment.”

Russ Feingold Introduces Bill to Help Wisconsinites Watch the Packers, Wisconsin-Related TV

September 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

U.S. Senator Russ Feingold introduced legislation late yesterday that would help residents living in northern and western Wisconsin receive Wisconsin-related television programming, including in-state news, weather, sports and entertainment. There are 13 counties in Wisconsin that are part of Minnesota or Michigan television markets, that leaves many of the 157,210 Wisconsin households in those counties with programming that is not tailored to Wisconsin. Senator Feingold’s Letting Our Communities Access Local Television (LOCAL TV) Act, gives the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) greater authority to change media market boundaries or allow additional in-state signals for individual counties that do not receive in-state television signals.

“Most people assume that when they turn on their televisions, they will be able to view local news, weather and sports from their own state. But many frustrated Wisconsinites who live in the northern and western parts of our state have told me at my listening sessions, that is not the case,” Feingold said. “While many cable systems have stepped up and worked with Wisconsin broadcasters to find a way to provide some in-state programming, others such as the satellite providers have not been able to find a solution. The measure I introduced today will give the FCC the ability to cut through the finger-pointing and consider petitions to adjust media market boundaries or allow them to overlap so Wisconsinites can get the programming that matters most to them.”

There are at least four times this fall when the Packers and Vikings play different teams at the same day and time. That means many Packers fans may not be able to watch their team on their usual station if their county is in a Minnesota media market. Feingold’s legislation will help ensure border counties can receive both in-state and out-of-state signals.

“As a Packers shareholder, I know that preventing Wisconsinites from tuning into the Packers is plain wrong, and it’s even worse when they get the Vikings instead,” Feingold said. “With the football season in full swing, it is long past time that this problem is corrected so it is easier for more Wisconsinites to watch their favorite team.”

Russ Feingold has fought for several years to help northern and western Wisconsin receive Wisconsin-related television programming. In July of this year, Feingold sent a letter to the FCC urging them to use their technical expertise and influence in the industry to find a solution. During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on February 25, 2009, Feingold raised these concerns and questioned TV executives about a solution. Later in the year, Feingold teamed up with Wisconsin Senator Herb Kohl in offering an amendment to the Satellite Television Modernization Act of 2009. Feingold remains committed to pursuing all options to help those affected Wisconsinites receive Wisconsin-based coverage.

New Feingold Campaign Television Ad: “Creative Destruction”

September 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

MILWAUKEE – Today, the Feingold Campaign released a new television ad, entitled “Creative Destruction.” The ad compares Senator Feingold’s strong, record of opposing unfair trade deals that have shipped Wisconsin jobs to other countries with Ron Johnson’s stated support for unfair trade deals and his belief that job loss is “creative destruction.”

Senator Feingold has consistently opposed trade agreements supported by both parties, and by both President Clinton and President Bush. Feingold stood up to both parties in Washington and voted against NAFTA, CAFTA, GATT, Fast Track Authority, and Most Favored Nation trading status for China, which have all contributed to job loss in Wisconsin.

“Creative Destruction” features two Wisconsin businesses, the Evenflo Company and Mirro Corporation, both of which closed their doors and shipped Wisconsin jobs to other countries. In January 2003, Evenflo announced it would close its doors in Suring and ship 200 Wisconsin jobs to Mexico. Wisconsin jobs lost to unfair trade deals at Mirro, in Manitowoc, are also highlighted in “Creative Destruction.” In 2003, Mirro announced that it was closing its cookware plants, after 118 years. The manufacturing operation moved to other locations, including plants overseas, causing the loss of 882 Wisconsin jobs. [Associated Press, 2/13/2003; Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 2/6/2003]

Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Ron Johnson has said that the unfair trade deals supported by both parties in Washington have been “successful” for Wisconsin’s economy: “But the fact of the matter is NAFTA and CAFTA have actually been successful for our economy.” [Joy Cardin Show, Wisconsin Public Radio, 7/26/10]

According to Department of Labor figures, unfair trade deals have led directly to at least 64,000 Wisconsin workers losing their jobs. According to a 2007 Economic Policy Institute report, unfair trade deals led to a trade deficit that contributed to Wisconsin losing 141,100 jobs. Nationally, 5.6 million jobs were lost or displaced by the trade deficit. The Economic Policy Institute also reported that 59,100 Wisconsin jobs were lost due to trade with China between 2001 and 2007 alone.

The “Creative Destruction” ad highlights Johnson’s own words on the unfair trade deals when he was asked about them on July 26 at a WisPolitics.com luncheon held at the Madison Club.

When Johnson was specifically asked by the media if he supported NAFTA, Most Favored Nation trading status for China and the Korean trade deal currently before the U.S. Senate, Johnson stated his support, “I’m definitely supportive.” [WisPolitics Luncheon, 7/26/2010]

In a follow-up question from the media, Johnson has even called the trade deals that have led to job loss in Wisconsin “creative destruction.”

WisPolitics Moderator: “You’re supportive of these free trade agreements? Because some manufacturers here, they blame those free trade agreements somewhat for hurting their business. I don’t know which companies but I’ve heard that from executives in Wisconsin because the manufacturing job loss has been so great here in this state.”

Ron Johnson: “Well in a free market capitalist system there are always winners and losers. It’s creative destruction. That just happens. It’s unfortunate. But let’s face it, if it weren’t for that we’d still have buggy whip companies.” [WisPolitics Luncheon, 7/26/2010]

Feingold supports fair trade with other countries and has introduced the Minimum Trade Standards Resolution to help fix failed trade policies by setting forth principles that future trade agreements must meet. He has also introduced legislation to allow the United States to renegotiate current trade agreements. And he is an original cosponsor of the TRADE Act – legislation that would allow the United States to review and renegotiate trade agreements, as well as set forth the principles on which future trade agreements should be negotiated.

Creative Destruction” Television Ad Script:

Ron Johnson: “In a free market capitalist system, there’s always winners and losers. It’s creative destruction.”

Senator Feingold: “This is what my opponent calls creative destruction. In 2003, the Evenflo Company closed its doors and moved all its jobs to Mexico. Unfair trade agreements like NAFTA were directly responsible for these lost jobs. But Ron Johnson favors those deals.”

Ron Johnson: “NAFTA and CAFTA have actually been successful for our economy.”

Senator Feingold: “I’m Russ Feingold and I approved this message because you deserve a senator who will fight to create and protect Wisconsin jobs”

Milwaukee Area Legislators Support Scott Walker’s 2011 Milwaukee County Budget Proposal

September 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

In response to Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker’s 2011 Milwaukee County budget proposal elected officials from the Milwaukee area released the following statements:

I applaud County Executive Scott Walker for proposing his 9th straight budget that holds the line on property taxes. Walker’s 2011 budget proposal reduces the overall property tax levy by $1 million and requires county employees to pay the employee portion of their pension contribution, all while still protecting core county services. Walker’s budget proposal shows, yet again, that he is a leader capable of making the tough decisions necessary during difficult economic times to rein in government spending. This type of leadership will help create an environment that encourages the private-sector job growth needed to get our economy back on track.”

-State Representative Mark Honadel, 21st Assembly District

“In times of economic crisis, we need leaders who are willing to stand up and make the tough decisions needed to bring government spending in line with taxpayers’ ability to pay. Scott Walker is a leader who is ready to tackle Wisconsin’s $2.7 billion budget deficit.

If you take a look at Walker’s record, with his 2011 Milwaukee County Budget proposal, he has proposed nine consecutive budgets that didn’t increase the property tax levy over the year before. Walker’s 2011 proposal reduced the total property tax levy by $1 million by asking county employees to pay a small portion of their own pension contribution, just like most private-sector employees.

The State of Wisconsin is facing a crisis thanks to eight years of fiscally irresponsible budgeting by Governor Jim Doyle. Mayor Tom Barrett supports nearly all of Governor Doyle’s big government spending programs. At the same time Mayor Barrett has increased spending and property taxes in the City of Milwaukee, Scott Walker responsibly managed the county’s budget.

I support Walker’s fiscally responsible 2011 Milwaukee County Budget plan, and his plan to fix our state’s budget crisis.”

-State Senator Albert Darling, 8th Senate District

“Scott Walker’s 2011 Milwaukee County budget proposal asks county employees to pay a portion of their own pension contributions, cuts the property tax levy by $1 million and protects essential government services. For nine years Walker has proposed fiscally responsible budgets for Milwaukee County and I trust him to do the same as our next Governor. With the state facing at least a $2.7 billion budget deficit we need Scott Walker now.”

State Senator Mary Lazich, 28th Senate District

“Reducing taxes and finding a better, more affordable way to provide services to Milwaukee County residents is crucial. I am looking forward to working with Scott Walker to find innovative ways to accomplish just that.”

State Representative Jeff Stone, 82nd Assembly District

For the 9th straight year County Executive Scott Walker has introduced a fiscally responsible Milwaukee County Budget proposal. At a time when government bodies all across Wisconsin have relied on job-killing tax increases to balance government budgets, Scott’s proposal puts the operation of Milwaukee County government in line with taxpayers’ ability to pay. Scott has a record of making the tough decisions needed to stop runaway government spending, which is exhibited by this most recent budget proposal. I am confident that Scott will be able to get the State of Wisconsin’s fiscal house in order as our next governor, just like he has done in our area while serving as Milwaukee County Executive.

State Representative Jim Ott, 23rd Assembly District

Milwaukee Now Fourth Poorest City In Nation

September 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

Dan Sebring, candidate for the 4th District of Wisconsin who will face Congresswoman Gwen Moore on November 2nd observed, “It is not an accident that one of the most socialistically inclined cities in the country is also among the poorest. Milwaukee has had Socialist and socialist Democrat Mayors for most of the last century. The city’s status today is the logical result of the failed policies of Big Government.”

Sebring cites the fact that the cost of government (COG) is almost 2/3 of the economy nationally, and that in Wisconsin, and Milwaukee in particular, COG is higher than the national average. Cost of government includes not just taxes, but also fees, permits, licenses, as well as those expenses paid to private entities in compliance with government mandates. Dan Sebring notes that when unfunded liabilities taxes will have to double in order to pay for all the obligations of the government. “Clearly, we can not afford the government we have, much less the expanded government my opponent wants and has consistently voted for” he said.

Dan Sebring noted that the jobs of the poor are typically among the quickest to disappear and the among the last to come back. Sebring also cited Republican “moderates” who compromised and voted away principle as contributing to the problem. “Big government means big taxes, now or in the future and big taxes and big regulations mean higher prices as these costs are always passed on to consumers, and who is hurt worst by that? Obviously it the poor that are affected the most.”

Sebring concluded by saying “I think as Republicans we have missed the boat by not appealing to the poor and minorities, showing them that limited government means more opportunity, more freedom, more strength, more wealth, and more independence for the people of all colors and creeds. Obviously, Big Government is not working, and nowhere is that more obvious than in my Congressional district. For example, many do not know that the recent $26 billion dollar teacher’s union bailout was financed by borrowing from the Federal Food Stamp program (SNAP). By continuing to vote in favor of Big Government intervention, in the name of doing good Gwen Moore continues to hurt the poor.”

Wisconsin Laborers’ District Council endorses Senator Feingold

September 29th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

Today the Wisconsin Laborers’ District Council endorsed Russ Feingold for U.S. Senate.

“Russ Feingold understands how hard working families have been hit by the failed economic policies of Republicans,” said John Schmidt, president and business manager of Wisconsin Laborers’ District Council. “He knows this election is all about protecting and creating jobs and he’s had the courage to do the right thing to move our economy forward, the United States Senate doesn’t need another out-of-touch, multimillionaire who will be a friend to corporate special interests. Wisconsin Laborers are proud to support Russ Feingold – an honest, principled and independent voice for Wisconsin’s working families.”

“I have always stood with the construction craft laborers of Wisconsin,” said Feingold. “I will continue fighting for Wisconsin working families, and I’m proud the Wisconsin Laborers want me to continue my fight for them in Washington.”

Ron Johnson has praised the business climate in China and has stated that unfair trade deals that have shipped Wisconsin jobs to other countries have been good for our economy. He even calls the unfair trade deals “creative destruction,” standing with corporations instead of standing up for the Wisconsin families who have lost jobs to the unfair trade deals.
