Wisconsin Papers Rip Ron Johnson for Dodging Issues and Voters

October 31st, 2010 by Robert Rosati

Newspapers across the state continued to endorse Senator Russ Feingold for reelection yesterday. Feingold picked up the backing of the Chippewa Herald, Kenosha News and Milwaukee Courier. The Herald praised Feingold’s “independent character.” The News touted Feingold’s bipartisanship. And the Courier wrote that Feingold “cannot be bought by the highest bidders.”

Those papers join the endorsements of Feingold from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Green Bay Press-Gazette, La Crosse Tribune, Monroe Times, Sheboygan Press, Wausau Daily Herald, Stevens Point Journal, Capital Times, Abbotsford Tribune-Phonograph and the Daily Cardinal.

Multimillionaire candidate, Ron Johnson has refused to meet with many newspapers across the state, denying communities the opportunity to analyze the candidate’s positions. The papers Johnson has met with have routinely called him out for his lack of specific answers or bad answers, altogether.

“We would have liked to have sat down with Johnson, as we did with Feingold and other candidates, to discuss the issues in a give-and-take session, but in the many months he was a candidate that apparently wasn’t a priority for him.” – Chippewa Herald

“We’re not so sure what we’d be getting with Ron Johnson. His campaign did not return messages seeking a meeting with the Editorial Board, so it was tough to form any impression of the Republican challenger.” – Stevens Point Journal

“Attempts to schedule an interview with Ron Johnson were unsuccessful… We haven’t seen Johnson around these parts much.” – Monroe Times

“Ron Johnson might also be able to work with members of the other party, but there is no way to tell…” – Kenosha News

“His answer to questions in the limited interviews and appearances he has made have shown a propensity for vague and scripted talking points that strike emotional chords without substance or thought.” – Oshkosh Northwestern (In a column for the paper, Oshkosh Northwestern Managing Editor Jim Fitzhenry noted Johnson refused to meet with his hometown newspaper’s editorial board.)

Those who have heard what Ron Johnson had to say are not impressed.

“Aside from vapid talking points about TARP and the stimulus bill, Johnson has no answer. Johnson has no answer – or the wrong answer – on many topics.” – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 10/24/10

“Johnson’s spending-control plan is little more than a repeat of the standard talking points of a challenger. There simply is no substance.” – Sheboygan Press

“In other words, Johnson seems to have no interest in working in a bipartisan fashion — something that Feingold stands for and that the people of Wisconsin expect.” – La Crosse Tribune

“…Johnson seemed unable to further articulate his plan for job creation — especially for the middle class…”- Green Bay Press-Gazette

“Johnson’s views, by contrast, at times have seemed strangely veiled. In an Editorial Board interview with the Wausau Daily Herald, he made the bizarre argument that literally any public discussion of foreign policy by a U.S. senator is inappropriate, and that the only way he would pursue changes in foreign policy as a senator would be behind closed doors.” – Wausau Daily Herald

Wisconsin Internet News Endorses Tom Barrett for Governor

October 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

As a staff, we have made the decision to endorse Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett for Governor. Our reasons are as follows:

Tom Barrett recently unveiled a trade agenda that would protect Wisconsin workers and promote exports for Wisconsin businesses.

Barrett also gave his word that raids on Wisconsin Transportation funds will be put to an end.

Tom Barrett’s opponent has contradicted himself and misled the public on his stances numerous times. Additionally, his opponent has run conflicting advertisements attacking Tom Barrett. Furthermore, police have declared scandals at the Milwaukee County Health Complex, which occurred under Scott Walker’s watch, endanger the public.

Perhaps the most important reason that we have decided to endorse Tom Barrett for Governor is that
he recently revealed reforms that would fix Wisconsin’s broken school financing system.

Wisconsin Internet News Endorses Russ Feingold for Senate

October 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

As a staff, we have made the decision to endorse Russ Feingold for Senate. Our reasons are as follows:

Senator Russ Feingold is the number one enemy of Washington, D.C. lobbyists.

Senator Feingold’s opponent supports extending the Bush tax cuts for millionaires like himself, which would add $700 billion to the deficit. His opponent also has no plan for farmers and rural Wisconsin.

Additionally, Ron Johnson’s failure to offer any detailed plans and solutions to cut wasteful spending, reduce the deficit, protect and create jobs, and move the economy forward is unsettling. Senator Feingold was recently endorsed by more than 700 business leaders in Wisconsin, in part because he has announced detailed plans to cut down on wasteful government spending with his Control Spending Now Act.

Perhaps the most important reason that we have decided to endorse Russ Feingold for Senate is that he was the only senator to vote against the Patriot Act in 2001, which gutted the U.S. Constitution. Since that time he has continued to fight for reforms to the extremely broad surveillance powers granted under the Patriot Act.

new Scott Walker ad “Let’s Take Our Government Back”

October 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

Scott Walker Campaign Manager Keith Gilkes, yesterday issued the following statement on a new Scott Walker ad.

“Just as he has done throughout this campaign, Scott Walker is asking voters to examine his record,” said Gilkes. “Scott Walker has held the line on taxes and spending while working to put government back on the side of the people again. He will do the same as governor, Tom Barrett will not.”

The advertisement can be seen here.

fact checks on Scott Walker reveal contradictions

October 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

Scott Walker’s record on supporting public education doesn’t match up with his statements at the debate yesterday.

Walker proposed a budget amendment in 1997 to cut state aid for schools. Assembly Republicans complained that school districts had been abusing a 1995 deal in which the state pledged to pay for two-thirds of local school costs. Walker surmised that the proposed funding cuts would prevent schools from draining the state budget. Walker reintroduced his amendment in 1998. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Walker admitted that his proposal was “extreme” when compared to other legislators.

•Wisconsin State Journal, “School-Borrowing Incentive Criticized, Republican wants to cut State Support,” 12/17/1998
•Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “School Repairs May Become Tougher to Handle: Lawmakers Aim to Cut State’s Share of District Referendums,” 4/25/1999

Milwaukee County House of Corrections Escape, Overdose Due to Officers Burned Out Working Mandatory Double Shifts. In August 2007, a House of Corrections inmate escaped from the facility and two months later, an inmate overdosed on unauthorized prescription drugs. County Supervisor Mark Borkowski said the guards were not to blame, “the elephant in the room is the staffing… [officers] are getting burned out. They’re working mandatory double shifts. Something’s got to give.” (TMJ4, “Neighbors Want Answers after Jail Escape,” 8/5/07; “Escapee’s Plan Detailed in Letter,” 8/8/07; “House of Correction Adds More Security,” 8/07; Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Inquest sought in inmate’s death,” 11/29/07)

Scott Walker Continually Attempted to Cut Full Time Employees at House of Corrections, Failed to Fill Funded Positions. Walker responded to his cuts being returned to the budget by simply not filling large amounts of those positions. In 2007, 38 positions were funded but unfilled, but then in 2008, 56 total positions were left empty. The audit of the system called it a “vicious circle of mandatory extra shifts, burnout and runaway overtime payments at the Milwaukee House of Corrections in Franklin.” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Guards’ overtime mounts,” 6/30/07 and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Guards’ overtime mounts,” 6/30/07 and Milwaukee County, “Report on Vacant and Funded Positions – Revised,” 10/17/08)

Sheriff Takeover of House of Corrections Fixed Problems in 4 Months. In December of 2008, the County Board voted to give control of the facility to the Milwaukee County Sheriff. It was reported in April 2009 that after only 4 months of being in charge, the Milwaukee County Sheriff was able to improve many of the problems that plagued the facility. They reported that security was tighter, overtime had been significantly reduced and training had improved. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 4/10/09)

Walker’s Reckless Budgeting Threatened Early Release, Reduction of Freeway Patrols: Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. says his 2010 budget has a nearly $5 million hole in it, which will force him to release 120 jail inmates to home detention, discontinue inmate rehabilitation programs and possibly reduce freeway patrols. “There are consequences to how you have patched this budget together,” Clarke says in a letter to County Executive Scott Walker, County Board Chairman Lee Holloway and other supervisors. “That is not a threat; it is reality.” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 1/13/10)

Scott Walker’s claims to have held the line on tax increases are worse are apparently not true. Charts shown
here indicate the exact opposite.

Barrett campaign claims victory over Scott Walker in last debate before election

October 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

“Tonight the people of Wisconsin saw once again why Tom Barrett is the best choice to lead our state as governor in these tough times. Tom has delivered true reform, owns a real record of creating jobs, and offers the most detailed, comprehensive vision to grow the economy, and to Put Madison on a Diet. Our next governor will confront serious challenges, and only Tom Barrett provides the adult leadership needed to work with the private sector to create jobs, and solve the $2.7 billion deficit while protecting core Wisconsin principles like education, public safety and BadgerCare.

“Scott Walker can’t be trusted in these tough times. The problems our state faces – budget deficits and borrowing, raiding funds, pension reform and an unfocused job strategy – are the same problems still plaguing Milwaukee County after eight years of Scott Walker’s failed leadership as County Executive. Walker has no record on jobs, and has shown time and time again he will do or say anything to get elected.

“The choice is this election is clear: Tom Barrett offers straight talk and honest plans to move Wisconsin forward. Scott Walker is just another typical politician Wisconsin workers and families can’t trust to reform Wisconsin.”

It’s worth noting that Scott Walker’s campaign has not claimed to have won the debate last night as of this time.

Illinois Corporation Seeks to Buy Wisconsin Attorney General’s Office

October 30th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

An out-of-state corporation seeks to buy the Wisconsin Attorney General’s office, according to documents filed with the state Government Accountability Board today. The Illinois corporation, with ties to the infamous and discredited “Swift Boat” attack team, is set to spend an undisclosed amount to save the flailing campaign of incumbent Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.

The Illinois corporation is backed by other out-of-state corporations and prominent supporters of President George W. Bush – including $250,000 from a group controlled by Karl Rove and a major investment from the man who financed the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” shadow group in 2004. The corporation has already been forced to retract attack ads it placed in opposition to candidates in other states.

“Corporate special interests already spent over $2.5 million to buy the election for J.B. Van Hollen in 2006,” said Jason Stephany, Hassett campaign spokesman. “Now we have an actual Illinois corporation spending undisclosed amounts at the 11th hour to buy Wisconsin’s Office of the Attorney General.”

The last minute expenditure comes on the heels of recent polls showing stagnant numbers for the incumbent Attorney General, while undecided voters continue to break to challenger Scott Hassett.

“Down in the polls and hemorrhaging critical support, Van Hollen has turned to an Illinois corporation to help buy the Office of Attorney General,” Stephany said. “This is exactly the kind of corporate and political influence voters are rejecting with J.B. Van Hollen.”

Phil Walzak “Scott Walker cannot be trusted”

October 29th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker is under fire for another false, misleading ad. It’s only the latest time Walker has been taken to task by independent 3rd parties during the campaign for not being honest with Wisconsin voters

“Scott Walker has proven throughout this campaign that he cannot be trusted – independent groups time and time again have called him out for it and Wisconsin voters see through it,” said Barrett for Wisconsin Communications Director Phil Walzak. “Scott Walker cannot be trusted.”

New Feingold Campaign Ad: “Trust”

October 29th, 2010 by Robert Rosati

This morning the Feingold Campaign released a new television ad statewide, entitled “Trust.” The advetuisement features Senator Russ Feingold speaking directly to voters, saying, “I understand who I work for. Not a political party. Not the special interests. I work for you. So I’ve been an independent voice for Wisconsin and the number one enemy of the Washington lobbyists.”

An independent analysis by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel confirmed Feingold’s strong record of independence. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Feingold’s votes support maverick label, 9/19/10)

Russ Feingold was also named the number one enemy of Washington lobbyists by Washingtonian Magazine. Feingold’s opponent, Republican multimillionaire Ron Johnson, has received financial support from the leader of Senate Republicans, Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, who was recently named by Washingtonian Magazine as the number one friend of Washington lobbyists. Johnson has also received contributions from corporate special interests and Washington, D.C. lobbyists representing Wall Street, the oil industry, and insurance and pharmaceutical companies. In addition, out-of-state, special interests have attacked Feingold on Johnson’s behalf with over $2.6 million of spending fueled by secret donors. Johnson supports repealing health insurance reform, shipping Wisconsin jobs to other countries, and cutting taxes for corporations and millionaires like himself.

“Trust” features editorial endorsements of Senator Feingold from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oshkosh Northwestern, La Crosse Tribune, Green Bay Press-Gazette, and the Capital Times. The conservative Press-Gazette’s endorsement was the first time it has ever backed Senator Feingold. Feingold has also been endorsed by Wausau Daily Herald, Abbotsford Tribune-Phonograph, Monroe Times, Sheboygan Press, and Stevens Point Journal.
