Racine Unified School District to Open Contract Negotiations With Unions

February 28th, 2011 by Robert Rosati

The Racine Unified School District Board of Education has agreed to open contract negotiations with the District’s Union represented employees. This decision was made to ensure that the proposed budget cuts cause the smallest amount of disruption possible to Racine Unified schools.

The Board believes that the improved relations between the unions and administration in recent years make it possible to reach a local agreement that will provide the needed budget relief and flexibility to meet the coming fiscal crisis.

“The most important thing we have is collaboration,” said School Board President Bill Van Atta. “Collaboration is what gave the District the North Star vision for student learning and school improvement plans in every Racine Unified school, and collaboration has contributed to the gains we are seeing in student achievement. Having agreements in place will show that all employees who serve the children of the District can and will work together in the best interest of the children.”

Negotiations between District officials and union leadership will begin starting tomorrow. Negotiations are for the 2011 through 2013.

Congresswoman Gwen Moore statement on Wisconsin Assembly passing Budget Repair Bill

February 28th, 2011 by Robert Rosati

U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore made the following statement after the Wisconsin State Assembly passed a bill that nearly eliminates collective bargaining for public workers today.

“We’ve known for a long time that these worker provisions aren’t about balancing the budget. We’ve seen it clearly as workers offer up more and more financial concessions. This is about busting unions. And a recent prank call just confirmed it.

“Workers have indicated they’ll give up a lot for the good of our state. Now what about Governor Walker? Since when is compromise a dirty word?

“This Governor’s proposals are extreme – and recent polling shows it. For years, Republican and Democratic governors alike have at least brought workers to the table.

“This fight is far from over. I stand in solidarity with our teachers, our civil servants, our prison workers and all of our public employees.

“While the worker provisions are bad enough on their own – this budget repair bill does damage across the board. We could jeopardize transit funding to many communities. Those in need may lose health care with no legislative oversight. The state could sell power plants without competitive bidding which could benefit major donors. We should all be extremely troubled by this.”

Scott Walker gives “Senate Democrats’ 24 hour notice”

February 28th, 2011 by Robert Rosati

One component of Governor Walker’s budget repair bill is debt refinancing, which will save taxpayers $165 million in fiscal year 2011. According to the Legislative Fiscal Bureau, if Senate Democrats refuse to return to Wisconsin and cast their votes in the next day the option to refinance a portion of the state’s debt will be off the table.

Along with this notice Governor Walker’s spokesman, Cullen Werwie, released the following statement. “Senate Democrats claimed they fled the state to slow down the process so the public had enough time to learn about the budget repair bill. If that was their true intention, they have been successful. Now they have one day to return to work before the state loses out on the chance to refinance debt, saving taxpayers $165 million this fiscal year. Failure to return to work and cast their votes will lead to more painful and aggressive spending cuts in the very near future. This is the Senate Democrats’ 24 hour notice.”

Of course what Werwie conveniently doesn’t mention is that the Budget Repair Bill would end fifty years of collective bargaining for most public workers in Wisconsin. Police, fire and state patrol would be exempted from the changes. Wisconsin Senate democrats walked out in protest of the Budget Repair Bill.and Walker wants them back to pass the bill.

Celebrations take center stage at Kenosha museums throughout this year

February 27th, 2011 by Robert Rosati

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Kenosha Public Museum, a natural sciences and fine and decorative arts museum. Visionary citizens worked to establish the Kenosha Art and Historical Museum during the early years of the Great Depression. The U.S. Post Office building was painstakingly moved several blocks to create a physical home for this dream. Collections from around the world were donated, and what soon became known as the Kenosha Public Museum quickly grew to include travelogues, children’s programs and high quality exhibits. Over time, generations have come to rely on the Museum for enrichment, education, and entertainment. Accredited by the American Association of Museums, it hosts world-class exhibitions and boasts a permanent collection of more than 90,000 natural science, history and art artifacts and specimens.

In 2001, the Museum moved ten blocks away to a new, state-of-the-art facility overlooking Lake Michigan. In the past ten years, the museum has become part of a museum campus with the Civil War Museum rising next door, and the Dinosaur Discovery Museum moving into the Kenosha Public Museum’s old digs. Several events are planned this year to commemorate the special anniversary, including a museums crawl via streetcar on Friday, July 15 and a Museum-athon: 75 hours of museum programming August 19th through the 22nd at the Kenosha Public Museum.

As 2011 unfolds, more celebrations will be unveiled. The Civil War Museum kicks off its Civil War Sesquicentennial commemoration on April 16th with the Grand Union Ball. The commemoration will span across the coming years. Petrifying Springs Golf Course, Kenosha County’s oldest public golf course, will be rolling out its own big anniversary celebration as its 75th season opens this spring.
